Score 87/100 · Drink 2016-2020, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Nov 2015

The 2013 Pinotage is matured in 80% French new wood for 16-18 months. It has a tightly-knit nose, broody black fruit, a little introspective with a subtle raisin note on the background. The palate is medium-bodied with toasty tannin. It comes across quite oaky, although there seems to be adequate fruit towards the finish. There is freshness here and racy acidity, though less oak would have been preferable.

(14.7% alcohol; aged for 16 months in 80% new French oak): Dark, saturated ruby. Aromas of blueberry, violet, licorice and cedar. Lovely penetration to the clean, dark flavors of cassis and bitter chocolate. Shows none of the burnt rubber or woodsmoke elements that still plague some examples of Pinotage. Finishes firmly tannic and backward but without any hardness. This wine's structure and compelling sugar/acid balanace should ensure a long and graceful evolution in bottle.
