Score 88/100 · Drink 2018-2022, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Sep 2017

Pale straw-yellow. Apple, white peach, menthol, peppery herbs and stone on the rather cool, minerally nose, complemented by spicy vanillin oak. Supple but quite dry, herbal and peppery, conveying a fine-grained texture but only moderate ripeness and depth of fruit. With its modest mid-palate material, this stony wine finishes with a slight burn.

More fruit intensity here compared with the Meursault. More lime and herbs. Deeper and richer on the palate too but just a little watery on the finish, so that the oak sticks out a touch on the end, reverting to creamy vanilla. (JH)

(aged in 30% new oak, as with all of these 2015 premier crus): Bright, pale yellow. Yellow fruits and spices on the nose and palate, complicated by menthol and white pepper notes. Concentrated and brisk, showing a distinctly peppery herbal lift. Not quite as expressive today as the Meursault Charmes but boasts lovely energy.
