Tasting notes
Bursting with a bright, fresh nose with crunchy red fruit aromas, the 2022 Old Vine Series Soldaat displays impeccable balance and crystalline purity from a challenging vintage. Medium-bodied and with lively acidity and delicate mineral tension, the Grenache bursts with bright red fruit flavors, even though it spent less time on the skins and clocks in with some of the lowest alcohol for the bottling. Only 6,800 bottles were filled with 50% whole-cluster Grenache. Bravo, I want more!

Grenache from Citrusdal Mountain – Piekenierskloof. 22 hl/ha. Ageing in concrete tanks only. Slightly smoky with faint fermentation aromas, fresh and expressive: plenty of raspberry, hints of bruised strawberry. Pretty rather than complex, still with a hint of CO 2 on the palate. Rather too fruity to reveal the vinosity and just a little brittle as it edges to the finish. (MF)
About the producer

Since he started making wine under his own name in 2000, Eben Sadie became a cult name in South Africa. The Swartland producer is best known for his flagship Columella and Palladius, but he also makes a range of whites and reds under the Old Vine Series, which became the District Series in 2025.
