(the Moreaus get this fruit from 40-year-old vines in an exchange with another grower): Bright pale yellow. Lovely pure aromas of pear, white flowers and powdered stone. Then almost surprisingly plush and thick but weightless in the mouth, with its tangy citrus peel flavors lifted by a floral topnote. This suave wine boasts impressive stuffing and energy, and its very long, rising finish is seriously tactile but edge-free. Outstanding potential here, but lay it down.

The 2016 Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru has such a tightly wound bouquet that I am moved to use the word unresponsive! It was difficult to eke much out here, like a difficult interviewee. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, lightly honeyed in texture with notes of grilled walnut and smoke, impressive length with a tang of spice on the aftertaste. Excellent, although I actually think the Les Grandes Ruchottes is better. Just one barrel produced.

He exchanges juice with someone to get this. 2010 was the first vintage. No racking – the wine has been in the same barrel throughout its life. Very solid and dense. Very serious and intellectual. Not nearly ready. Very much for the future. A professor of a wine. (JR)
