Tasting notes
Sourced from the les Bédines lieu-dit and a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Safres shows lovely purity of fruit, with cherries and raspberries chasing around in a crescendo of red fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, silky, fine and elegant, with a lingering finish.

A step up, the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Safres offers a similar translucent ruby hue as well as a pretty nose of framboise and strawberry-like fruits supported by notes of loamy soil and flowers. It's medium-bodied and finesse-driven, with light tannins. I found too many of these 2020s from Le Clos du Caillou to be surprisingly light in color and lacking in concentration.
40% Roussanne, 30% Grenache Blanc, 30% Clairette. Aged four months in old barrels. Organic. Rich and full with pear and floral notes and a creamy edge of well-integrated oak. Quite intense and fruit-driven on the palate, the ripeness there but gently restrained. Tangy-dry finish. (JL)
