Readers looking for a Médoc that over-delivers should check out the 2016 Château La Tour de By, a sleeper in this great vintage. Outstanding notes of cassis, spice box, dried tobacco, and nicely integrated oak flow to a medium to full-bodied effort that has a seamless, layered texture. I loved it.

Shows finesse with polished tannins and beautiful fruit character, from walnuts to currants. Medium body, delicate tannins and a delicious finish. Drink after 2021.

Deep crimson. Plenty of dark, savoury fruit and thick chewy tannins. Really quite challenging now but there’s richness and depth of fruit to give the tannins time to soften. (JH)
