Score 89-92/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2017

(vinified with 90% whole clusters): Pungent spices and minerals on the nose, but with a more subdued fruit element than the village version. A step up in concentration and density in the mouth but quite backward in the early going and dominated by its structure. Finishes with firm-edged tannins and a strong spicy character.

The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru comes from four different lieux-dits from north to south of the appellation. It has an attractive bouquet with black cherries, bilberry and orange blossom; the oak neatly folded into the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, masculine in style with subtle tobacco notes infusing the slightly broody and yet fresh and tensile finish. It deserves a couple of years in bottle and should evolve into a very attractive Morey-Saint-Denis.

Not racked. From four different premiers crus: Ruchots, Sorbès, Charrières and Millandes. 10 barrels made. Dense and luscious on the nose. Polished and a little like scented talcum power. Opulent but with good freshness. (JR)
