Magnum. Disgorged March 2016. 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay, 15-20% grands crus and premiers crus. Deep gold. Savoury, leathery nose. Then quite a bit of sweetness. This is certainly easy to love. Chalky, dry finish. Very racy and lively even though it’s the opposite of a stereotypical grower’s austere wine. This has massive charm. (JR)

Dense, tightly laced on the nose with real appeal. Some richness on the palate. Very flattering and spreads right across the palate. Fresh and clean. Lingering finish. (JR)

Quite deep gold with a tiny bead. Exuberant, complex nose – passion fruit? Hint of minerals. Broad and quite rich but this wine seems to have a lower dosage than some recent Pols. Pretty exciting stuff. Lots of effort seems to have gone into this. Vaguely salty finish. Tense and fun. (JR)

The 2006 Pol Roger Brut Millésime is composed of a blend of sixty percent pinot noir and forty percent chardonnay and was aged nine years sur latte prior to being finished off with a dosage of seven grams per liter. The wine today is drinking beautifully, offering up a deep and maturing bouquet of baked apple, caraway seed, lovely soil tones, warm bread, citrus peel and a gentle topnote of smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and very nicely balanced, with a good core, elegant mousse and fine length and grip on the wide open and ready to go finish. This will not make old bones by the standards of this cuvée, but that is the nature of the ’06 vintage, and for drinking over the next dozen years or so, there is an awful lot to like here!
