Clos du Caillou’s Grenache-dominated 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Safres comes from the sandstone soils of Les Bedines lieu-dit located by the estate. It was completely destemmed and spent 17 months in a mix of foudres and one- to five-year-old barrels. This beautiful, elegant 2006 offers terrific notes of ripe black raspberries, garrigue and licorice in a hedonistic, sexy, seamless package that’s absolutely hard to resist. Drinking right in the middle of its drink window, it should cruise for another 5-7 years.

Mainly grenache from the sandy soils of the Les Bédines vineyard, the 2006 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres sports a deep red, semi opaque color along with sweet aromatics ofwild herbs, kirsch and assorted red fruits, licorice and Asian spices. I like the sweetness and there's nice complexity as well. The palate is medium to full bodied with a silky, full texture, impressive balance and a medium length finish. This soft, downright gulpable wine should drink well over the next 10 to 12 years.

(100% grenache) Opaque ruby. Youthfully tight nose offers scents of red berries, cherry, minerals and fresh lavender. Vibrant, finely etched red berry flavors stain the palate, complicated by succulent herbs and licorice. Finishes with excellent tangy persistence and a strong echo of minerals.

Low-key sweet nose. Transparent and easy to approach. Rich but not horribly alcoholic. Some real refreshment in the fruit. Sweet and rewarding. Very ordinary label but it works. (JR)
