Tasting notes
I loved the two 2005s from Clos du Caillou and this team knocked it out of the park in this vintage. The 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape les Safres is still inky colored, with fabulous aromas and flavors of sweet blackberries, currants, toasted spice, camphor and licorice. Full-bodied, ripe and layered, with sweet tannin, this is a borderline fruit bomb that dishes out loads of pleasure. Much more open and exuberant than when I tasted it earlier this year, it should continue to shine for another 5-7 years.

95% Grenache, 5% Mourvèdre and Vaccarèse. Lieu-dit Les Bedines. Vinified in concrete tank, 17 months élevage in foudres. 12,000 bottles produced. Harvested 12 September. Unusually dark, glowing crimson. Very sumptuous and glorious. This has a real beginning, middle and end and beautiful texture. Holding itself together very well. Fun and fascinating. Long, rich and muscular. (JR)
