Tasting notes
The NV Champagne Rich Demi Sec sees 34 grams per liter dosage and is fresh with equal parts Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Meunier. Aromas of fresh croissant dough, white peach, and orange blossoms are followed by a medium-bodied, fresh style of wine. Refined with a precise feel, it’s a lovely style that’s often neglected but is an irreplaceable and fantastic tool to pair with a wide range of desserts, such as a summer fruit tart, spicy foods, and cheese. It’s long on the palate, with a clean finish and a delicate, pure sweetness throughout. Drink 2023-2033. Pol Roger is a sixth-generation family-owned business founded in 1849 that is solely focused on Champagne based in Epernay. Damien Cambres replaced former chef de cave Dominique Petit in 2018. Since 2011, they have fully moved to stainless steel fermentation and aging. They house 9.5 kilometers of cellars that are notably deep at 33 meters underground and employ four full-time riddlers to turn the bottles and carefully collect sediment from them. (Only 11 exist in the region today.) This year they completed a new facility for packaging and shipping that rests on the footprint of the historical site of the original cellars, which disastrously collapsed in 1900, destroying 1.5 million bottles. In August of 2022, Christian de Billy passed away at the age of 93. He was the great grandson of Pol Roger and was instrumental in the creation and launch of several cuvées, including the Rosé in 1961, the Blanc de Blancs vintage cuvée in 1965, and the cuvée Sir Winston Churchill in 1984 with the 1975 vintage. They own 92 hectares today and produce approximately 1.7 million bottles annually. Pol Roger is a Pinot Noir-based house that focuses on the art of blending. The wines tend to strike a balance of refinement in the mousse without shying away from power and structure across the range.

Served with 'opera gateau, chicory creme diplomat and chocolate malt' at the Clove Club launch of Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2013. Apparently the production of 30,000 bottles a year represents about 1% of Pol's total output. RS 54 g/l with the wine, in this case, based mainly on 2017, identical to the White Foil NV bottling. Really rather delicious! Well-judged balance between the light sweetness and acidity. (JR)
Based on the 2015 vintage and disgorged with around 30 grams per liter dosage, the latest release of Pol Roger's NV Demi Sec Rich is showing beautifully, offering up aromas of honeycomb, ripe pears, brioche, frangipane and candied peel. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, it's elegantly textural, with racy acids, nicely integrated sugar and a precise finish. This works very well with certain desserts—think fruit tarts made with flaky pâte sucrée—and will pick up additional complexity, making it even more versatile at the table, with bottle age.
The same as Pol's NV Brut based on 2014, with 25% reserve wines from the 2013, 2012 and 2010 vintages, with a dosage of 34 g/l. Nice balance and sweet enough to go with a moderately sweet dessert. Lively and assertive. (JR)
