Very, very pale orange – almost the same colour as very mature white wine. Extremely hedonistic with lots of autolysis and subtlety. Dense and rich but certainly not sweet even if it is far from austere. A really special rosé champagne – perhaps not surprisingly, from a house whose rosés are especially celebrated. (JR)

Light nose and quite a rich palate entry. This vintage is a real throat warmer and builds impressively towards the back of the palate. Quite powerful. (JR)

Supremely elegant and aristocratic in bearing, the 2002 Rosé Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon is simply exquisite. All the elements are beautifully nuanced. Above all else, the Cuvée Elisabeth is a Champagne of finesse, even in 2002. Crushed rose petals, cinnamon and spice gradually open up in the glass, but the 2002 is slow to reveal all of its charms. Readers lucky enough to own the 2002 can look forward to another 20 years or so of fine drinking.

Almost vin gris colour, though very pale. Very tiny bead. Quite mature and resolved on the nose. Really appetising kick on the finish and admirable persistence though a less complex finale than the Bollinger rosé 2004 tasted alongside. Fine rather than emphatic. (JR)
