Tasting notes
A blend of Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Pallamino, Viognier, Clairette, Semillon Blanc, Semillon Gris and the kitchen sink, aged in large concrete vessels and aged with no new wood on the lees for 12 months, the 2011 Sequillo White Blend It has a tightly wound bouquet with melted candle wax, light honeysuckle, jasmine and orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp, nutty, lemongrass-tinged entry. It is beautifully balanced with perfect acidity, the increased proportion of Clairette and Pallamino lending a little more race and edginess. It leads to a complex, quite potent finish. Outstanding. Drink now-2020. (Not yet released) Eben Sadie, the doyen and “spiritual leader” of Swartland, keeps Sequillo Cellars separate from Sadie Family Wines in order that they both stand on an equal platform and this includes distribution, whereby Eben has opted to seek an alternative distributor. Both current releases of Sequillo are well worth seeking out as some of South Africa’s finest, most intellectual wines. Importer: although Broadbent Selections are imported Sadie Family wines, at the moment the Sequillo is seeking what you might call a “suitable partner.”

About the producer

Since he started making wine under his own name in 2000, Eben Sadie became a cult name in South Africa. The Swartland producer is best known for his flagship Columella and Palladius, but he also makes a range of whites and reds under the Old Vine Series, which became the District Series in 2025.
