Score 90/100 · Drink 2018-2024, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Feb 2019

Full yellow-gold color. Fully evolved but not over the hill on the nose, offering inviting scents of pineapple and more exotic fruits, marzipan and a balsamic cedary note. Quite rich, silky and mouthfilling, conveying a subtle smoky quality to its pineapple, roasted grain and white truffle flavors. Nicely concentrated and balanced for this generous vintage, showing greater breadth and thickness on the back half than the 2000 bottling. Finishes smooth and long. I'd enjoy this wine now or over the next five or six years with foie gras or mushroom risotto. Véronique Drouhin told me that the family had some problems with corks in 1999 (as well as in 2012), but this bottle, while fully mature at age 20, is nonetheless evolving gracefully. (48 h/h; 3.23 pH; 4.0 g/l acidity)

Slightly reduced aromas of toasted almond, roasted grain, pear, flowers and vanillin oak. Dry, firm and light on its feet, with peach, pear and spice flavors currently dominated by somewhat edgy acids. Quite firm, dry and fine, if a bit austere today. Has the backbone to age.
