Tasting notes
Disgorged in April 2024 without dosage, Christophe Baron's 2020 Brut Nature Les Closeaux offers aromas of ripe apricot, honeysuckle and red plum. Medium- to full-bodied, it is textural and enveloping, delivering a generous core of fruit, succulent yet lively acidity and a long, enveloping finish. Sourced from a warm, southwest-facing site with shallow soils, where harvest typically occurs a week earlier than in Les Alouettes, this rendition is slightly less balanced than 2019; nevertheless, it is accessible from release.

The 2020 Champagne Les Closeaux Brut Nature pours a straw/copper color and on opening takes on more savory aromas of orange peel, flinty stones, tart red berries, almond skin, and fennel. Mouthwatering from the start, the palate opens to a juicy and saline feel, with a fine mousse and a bit of warmth through a rather long and persistent finish. It’s approachable now and should continue to improve over the coming decade. Drink 2025-2035.
The 2020 Brut Nature Les Closeaux is soft, open-knit and quite expressive. Floral overtones lift a core of Meunier fruit, adding to an impression of understatement and finesse. There's gorgeous immediacy, not to mention plenty of charm. Hazelnut and dried flowers open with a bit of coaxing. Zero dosage. Disgorged: May 2024.
