The mid to late 1990s were a period of considerable change in Piedmont, as the differences between traditional and more modern-leaning producers were especially marked during this time. The 1996 Barolo Rocche is dark, virile and imposing, all signatures of this super-classic vintage. Rose petal and tar notes give the 1996 much of its captivating appeal. The 1996 is the one wine in this tasting that did not respond well to aeration. In my view, the 1996 was never as beautiful as it was when the bottles were first opened. Readers lucky enough to own the 1996 are in for a fabulous experience, although I would suggest waiting another few years for the wine to come into its prime.

Moving into the 1990s, I admired the 1996 and 1999, two wines which share many similarities as they are both products of cool, fresh growing seasons. The 1996 showed itself to be the pure-breed classic it has always been. Gorgeous black cherries, baking spices and menthol all emerged from this vibrant, structured Barolo. Although it was terrific on this night, the firm tannins suggested it will age along with the best wines of the estate.

Saturated color and the sweet, rich red/black fruits are found in the 1996 Barolo Rocche. It is extremely full-bodied and tannic, a bit hard, but impressively endowed. If the tannin becomes better meshed, it will be an outstanding wine, but it will require patience from prospective purchasers. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2015.
