Score 94/100 · Drink 2025-2040, Kristaps Karklins, Wine Advocate, Jul 2025

From a southeast-facing parcel planted in 1968 in Charly-sur-Marne, Christophe Baron's 2020 Brut Nature Les Alouettes is a compelling success. As always, it ranks among the most tensile and racy-fresh wines in the range, sourced from a breezy site that ripens approximately 10 days later than Les Closeaux and remains largely immune to disease pressure due to these aerating winds. Disgorged in April 2024 without dosage, it opens from the glass with expressive notes of pear, orange zest and blanched almonds with a faint hint of nutmeg. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, saline, seamless and elegant and slightly more harmonious than the 2018 rendition. It concludes with a long, sapid finish and comes highly recommended.

The 2020 Champagne Les Allouettes Brut Nature is clean and fruity with an appealing and delicately reductive nose on opening, revealing notes of fresh strawberries, orange blossoms, and pastry dough. The palate boasts a refined and silky texture. with a spritely, fine mousse, a wonderfully seamless feel throughout, and a gently tapering and clean, stony finish. It is a gorgeous wine already and hard to resist now, but readers should feel confident holding onto these wines. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2020 Brut Nature Les Alouettes is deeply-hued and quite powerful. A Champagne of notable stature, the Alouettes offers a dramatic, intense expression of Meunier. There's gorgeous weight and resonance here, perhaps a touch more than is found in the other wines in the range this year. Meunier notes are decidedly amplified. Readers will find a very creamy, ample Champagne. Like all the 2020s, the Alouettes is a touch on the lighter side vis-à-vis some recent vintages. Zero dosage. Disgorged: May 2024.
