Bud break was inconsistent, occurring between April 8th and 24th for the different varieties. The clusters of Chardonnay were well set, but the red varieties were less satisfactory. The dates of flowering varied, and extended until mid-July, taking place under poor weather. Low temperatures during that period resulted in set and shatter. The harvest took place from October 9th to 15th. Despite the small clusters and limited yield, the harvest was of good quality. Harvest: Baumé 9°8 GL – Total acidity 11.1 g/l H2SO4 – S/A 14.8 Chardonnay: Baumé 9°7 GL – Total acidity 11.2 g/l H2SO4 Yield: 3,680 kg/ha Assemblage: 100% Chardonnay Grand Cru, exclusively from the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims. Bright coppery colour. A little too heavy to have much nose. Big and round and a bit simple. Glucose drink? (JR)

I thought the 1978 Dom Ruinart (disgorged September 2008) was the strongest of the wines from the 1970s. It revealed a liqueur-like sweetness in its perfumed fruit and ethereal, irresistible personality.
