Score 89/100 · Drink 2015-2018, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Aug 2015

Starting out slightly reticent, the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape from Chateau Cabrieres is comprised of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 20% Mourvedre and 10% Cinsault that was partially destemmed and aged a year in mostly concrete tanks. Starting out slightly reticent, it opened up nicely with air and revealed mature, classic notes of dried herbs, earth, licorice, leather and black cherry. Medium-bodied, charming, Provencal and straight up enjoyable, I’d drink it any night over the coming couple of years.

This cuvee was selected by French wine broker, Alain Corcia. It is not subjected to any fining or filtration either after fermentation or prior to bottling. The dark plum/garnet-colored 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape* reveals spicy, leathery, cedary aromas with jammy fruit in the background. Lusty and medium to full-bodied, with copious fruit, it is made in an open-knit, expansive style that begs to be drunk during its first decade of life.
