Saumade's 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape is 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre, all from Pignan (Nord), aged in older barriques. It's peppery and herbal, with ample cherry fruit, and remains bright and fresh, even while being full-bodied and silky textured. Still, there's a metallic note on the finish that makes me wonder how gracefully this will evolve.

50% Grenache Blanc, 25% Bourboulenc, 25% Clairette. Aged in old oak (barriques). Tasted blind. Lovely lemon-pith nose, lemon balm and moderate freshness. Nice layered fruit and a sweetness to the core of the wine – perhaps a little more freshness would be good. (AC)

A Grenache dominated blend that includes 10% Mourvèdre, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape comes from the northern part of the Pignan lieu-dit and was destemmed and brought up all in old barrels. It has a classic feel in its red and blue fruits as well as notes of peppery garrigue and violets. These carry to a medium-bodied 2019 that has wonderful purity, a sense of freshness and vibrancy, moderate tannins, and a great finish. It should be a classic Châteauneuf du Pape that’s going to benefit from short term cellaring and have 15 years or so of prime drinking.
