The classic 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape (60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre) has a deep ruby/purple color to go with lots of cassis, wild strawberry, crushed violets and Provençal herbs. Medium-bodied, supple, elegant and finesse-styled, drink it over the coming five to eight years.

Bright violet color. Fresh, mineral-accented red fruits on the nose, along with suggestions of pipe tobacco, lavender and licorice. Stains the palate with lively red and dark berry flavors, with a smoky mineral quality adding spine. Silky tannins shape the fruit-driven finish, which clings with very good tenacity and resonating spiciness.

100% Grenache. 100% destemmed. Blackish crimson. Open and treacly nose and then too sweet for comfort – positively sickly – and drying tannins. (JR)
