Tasting notes
Primarily from the Montagne de Reims, with 28% from the Coteaux du Sezannais, the 2018 Champagne Blanc De Blancs Brut has a bright medium yellow hue and offers an approachable, ripe, fruity profile on the palate, with notes of preserved white strawberries and white peach candies. Medium to full-bodied, it features a juicy, rounded texture, while remaining clean, well-defined, and complemented by a delicate, creamy mousse. It carries a hint of juicy, sweet fruit. As it matures, it should develop more patisserie notes of custard and croissant. More in the Meursault style from the Montagne, with a wide range of citrus and delicate passionfruit notes that are pure – likely stemming from the Sezannais – and more citrus influence from the northern Montagne, for my taste, it's just slightly on the sweet side, but it remains a highly appealing wine that should age gracefully. Drink 2025-2040. Contains 6.5 grams per liter of dosage. Founded in 1947, Palmer & Co. are established wine growers, mainly in Premier and Grand Crus of the Montagne de Reims, producing around one million bottles annually, with 80% exported. While they also have some wines from the Côte de Blancs and other areas, they are considered specialists of northern Montagne de Reims. In the cellar, they primarily use stainless steel. They maintain three soleras: one for Chardonnay, nearly 40 years old from Trépail and Marmery, which is used for the liqueur in dosage; another for red wine aged 50 years; and a Pinot Noir solera for a special Blanc de Noirs blend. Barrels are used only for the soleras. They also have a winery dedicated to making their red wine, which ages in old barrels in the cellars for 7 months. They perform malolactic fermentation because of the grapes’ origin.

The 2018 Brut Blanc de Blancs is made from 72% Chardonnay grown in premiers crus of the Montagne de Reims, with the remaining 28% sourced from the Sézannais. Gentle, lemony brightness on the nose is joined by a touch of creaminess. The palate is smooth, rounded and bright, looser than you might expect from a blanc de blancs, yet saltiness and purity are swirled up by the frothy mousse. This is an elegant aperitif with freshness and verve. Dosage is 6.1 gram per liter.
