The 2012 Gigondas les Souteyrades is exactly where it should be, right in the middle of its drinking window and balancing the vibrant garrigue and fruit of youth against darker notes of cola and chocolate. Full-bodied and supple, there's no reason to defer gratification here.

Horse stable aromas. Sweaty character. Overripe fruit. This is the style of southern Rhône that I find off-putting: clumsy and exaggerated. (RH)
Opaque ruby. Potent smoke- and earth-accented aromas of ripe dark berries and cherry compote, with a floral element adding vivacity. Sappy and palate-staining, offering intense blackberry and bitter cherry flavors given spine by juicy acidity. Clings with strong tenacity on the finish, which echoes the cherry and smoke notes.
Bright purple. Intensely perfumed scents of dark berry preserves, floral oils, incense and licorice, along with a spicy overtone. Sweet black raspberry and cherry-cola flavors show excellent clarity, a velvety texture and an exotic floral pastille quality. Smooth and expansive Gigondas, with excellent finishing freshness and floral persistence.
