Tasting notes
Bursting with expressive aromas of smoky citrus oil, honeycomb and wheat toast, the 2001 Mâcon-Pierreclos Le Chavigne is medium to full-bodied, satiny textured and open-knit, with racy but ripe acids and a charming, expressive profile, concluding with a delicately honeyed, botrytis-inflected finish. Guffens picked very late in 2001, and his harvest lasted fully 30 days.

The 2001 Mâcon-Pierreclos Le Chavigne is a wine that was made like at Thevenet. It has an attractive, fully mature bouquet of quite pungent lanolin and waxy notes and perhaps a little grey rot in the background. The palate is fresh but simple on the entry and a little lower in acidity than I would have liked. Some botrytis is evident on the finish, which has a welcome nutty/fumé edginess.
Toasty, nicely developed nose. Just enough acidity and very clean and fresh. Great balance. Certainly no youthful vigour, but stately evolution. (JR)
Musky, somewhat advanced aromas of resiny apple and nuts. Fatter and sweeter than the regular Pierreclos bottling, with more obvious ripeness. Fresher in the mouth than on the nose, and suppler than the 2001 Pouilly-Fuisses from this estate. Drink this early or wait four or five years, advises Guffens.
