Proprietor Claude Chastan’s top cuvee is the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape, a generous, soft, evolved wine offering notes of herbes de Provence, kirsch liqueur, spice box, and plenty of plum and earth. The wine is round, full-bodied, fleshy, and best drunk over the next 6-7 years. Importer: JAO Wine Imports tel (703) 628-9615

Dark red. Dense and meaty, with wild, intensely perfumed aromas of bitter cherry, smoked meat, licorice, espresso and black tea. Almost Bandol-like, with powerful dark fruit flavors complicated by garrigue, coffee and tree bark. Gained in sweetness as it unfolded in the glass. Give this brooding, serious wine the cellar time it deserves.
