The 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape La Begude des Papes is 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 12% Syrah and 3% Cinsault, aged in a 50-50 combination of tank and barrels. Hints of asphalt, black olives and garrigue appear on the berry-scented nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is smooth and supple, marked by charming kirsch flavors and a bright, lingering finish. Not a big blockbuster, it's reasonably elegant and refreshing for drinking young.

Brilliant ruby-red. Powerful blackberry, cassis and spicecake aromas show excellent clarity and pick up a smoky nuance with aeration. Sweet and seamless in the mouth, offering concentrated red and blue fruit liqueur, spicecake and lavender pastille flavors that are braced by a core of juicy acidity. Smoothly blends richness and delicacy and finishes long and sweet, the pliant tannins adding shape and subtle grip.

60% Grenache Blanc, 30% Clairette, 10% Bourboulenc. Aged in stainless steel and 20% new oak. Tasted blind. Dry, fibrous palate with a bitter orange note and easy-drinking structure. Seems quite anonymous. (RH)

The traditional cuvée from this estate is the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Begude Des Papes, a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, and the balance Mourvèdre and other permitted varieties. Loads of kirsch, blueberries, spice box, and garrigue notes emerge from the glass, and it's a beautifully balanced, elegant Châteauneuf that has the vintage's forward, charming, elegant style front and center. It's going to drink nicely for 7-8 years or more.
