Very dark crimson. Extremely bumptious, rudely ripe young red, although not especially Châteauneuf. Big, bold, virtually ruby-cheeked Grenache – you almost want to pinch this cheeky wine. Not especially serious but perhaps a valid response to the challenges of this particular vintage year. (JR)

The Grenache-dominated 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape reveals a classic kiss of kirsch liqueur along with notes of pepper, licorice, and herbs. Rich, full-bodied, and lush, with low acidity, ripe tannin, and heady levels of both glycerin and alcohol, it should be consumed over the next decade. No known American importer.
