(made from a singular blend of 85% mourvedre and 15% grenache): Opaque purple. Intensely perfumed aromas of black raspberry, Asian spices, anise and vanilla. Pliant and sweet on the palate, offering lively red and dark berry flavors that become deeper and smokier with air. Dusty tannins give grip to an impressively long, penetrating and fruit-driven finish.

The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Tintot (100% Mourvedre) comes close to equaling Manfred Krankl and Philippe Cambie’s debut release of Chimere, which is also virtually all Mourvedre. If you can not find Chimere on retailers’ shelves, check out the 2010 Le Tintot as there are about 2,000 bottles produced. An amazing expression of fully ripe Mourvedre, it offers up notes of steak tartare, porcini mushrooms, blueberries, blackberries, charcoal and camphor. Incredibly dense and full-bodied with no hard edges (noteworthy for a 100% Mourvedre cuvee), this stunning wine needs 5-6 years of cellaring, and should keep for 40+ years. This tiny 22-acre estate situated in the northern tier of Chateauneuf du Pape was founded in 1950, but has been brought to brilliance by Chaussy family over the last decade. Daniel Chaussy deserves enormous credit for introducing the spectacular Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Quet as well as the Chateauneuf du Pape Le Tintot, which is 100% Mourvedre. Both the 2007 and 2010 Cuvee du Quet have garnered perfect scores, and the latter wine may be the wine of the vintage. Sadly, only 5,000 bottles are produced of this extraordinary blend of 80% Grenache (aged in neutral tanks) and 20% Mourvedre (aged in small oak casks). My favorite vintage of this cuvee to date and one massive, structured Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the 2010 Mas de Boislauzon Le Tintot is a blend of 85% Mourvedre and 15% Grenache that was aged half in 2-year-old French oak barrels and half in tank. It delivers deep, brooding aromas of roasted meat, asphalt, licorice, and layers of blackberry and raspberry style fruit that carry into a full-bodied, tannic wine that has brilliant concentration, a core of sweet fruit, and masses of tannin that clamp down on the finish. This is not for those seeking instant gratification and needs to be forgotten for 5-7 years. It will evolve for 15-20 years or more.
(85% mourvedre and 15% grenache): Glass-staining purple. Showing more vivacity and freshness than the Cuvee de Quet, with a complex array of dark berry, flower and spice aromas. Lush, deeply pitched blackberry and cassis flavors are complicated by suggestions of succulent herbs and licorice. Finishes on a smoky note, with chewy tannins and excellent persistence.
