A more masculine wine, the 2015 Châteauneuf Du Pape Lucile Avril reveals a ruby/plum hue as well as lots of peppery garrigue, sandalwood, beef broth, and ripe, darker berry fruits. With medium to full-bodied richness, it has building yet polished tannins, wonderful purity of fruit, and a great finish. It has the balance and elegance to drink nicely today yet is still in the early stages of its drink window, with another 10-12 years of prime drinking ahead of it.

(made with whole clusters and aged in concrete tanks for the Grenache and Mourvèdre and small new oak barrels for the Syrah) Brilliant ruby-red. Powerful, smoke-tinged aromas of dark berries and violet are complicated by subtle floral pastille and garrigue nuances. Fleshy and nicely concentrated, showing very good clarity to the supple red and blue fruit flavors, which are sharpened by a vein of juicy acidity. The floral note repeats on the youthfully tannic finish, which shows impressive energy and closing thrust.

Tasted blind. Blackish purple – very dense. Soapy, floral, zesty aromas prevent this wine from toppling over itself. Very slightly dry end but on the way there it is all pleasure. (JR)

I loved the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Lucille Avril, and I’ve bought and cellared this cuvée for years (the 2007 is killer juice). Big, structured and tannic, yet with sensational purity and classic notes of blackberries, raspberries, roasted meats and roasted herbs, it expands on the palate, is impeccably balanced and will be an age-worthy Châteauneuf du Pape.
