I loved Autard's 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and it has more depth of fruit and texture than most. Cassis, toasted spice, garrigue and hints of vanilla give way to a ripe, sweetly fruited, sexy wine that has sweet tannin and a great finish. It's already a joy to drink but is going to keep for 10-12 years. The classic cuvée is 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre that’s destemmed and aged in 30% new barrels.

A classic blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape underwent élevage in new barriques. Oaky cedar and spice notes dominate this medium to full-bodied wine, which ends on lingering notes of cinnamon, clove and allspice.
Bright ruby-red. Smoke- and spice-accented aromas of ripe red berries and licorice carry a smoky mineral topnote. Focused, penetrating and firm, showing bright lift to the raspberry and bitter cherry flavors. Closes with resonating spiciness, gripping tannins and an echo of candied red fruit.
pH 3.61, TA 3.52 g/l. 70% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah. Destemmed. 14 months in new barrels (30%), used barrels (70%). Tasted blind. Bright crimson. Lots of gamey notes on the nose. Lively claret style. Not much obviously to do with Châteauneuf but a well-made red. Very firm tannins on the end! A hint of vanilla is unexpected. (JR)
