Made from 100% Syrah and 100% whole cluster, the 2018 Syrah Whole Cluster Las Madres Vineyard reveals a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It drifts effortlessly out of the glass with the most beautiful perfume of red roses, fragrant earth, bouquet garni, Ceylon tea, Sichuan pepper and star anise with a core of black cherry compote, blueberry pie and dark chocolate. The medium to full-bodied palate is laden with fragrant black fruit layers, framed by ripe, rounded tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing long and lifted. A real head-turner!

Even better than the Esther Block, the 2018 Syrah Las Madres Vineyard 100% Whole Cluster offers beautiful notes of jammy blackberries, mulberries, smoked game, ground pepper, and violets. These all flow to a medium to full-bodied Syrah that has a wealth of beautiful California fruit, present yet ripe, sweet tannins, and a fabulous mouthfeel and finish. It’s slightly more rounded and opulent on the palate compared to the Esther Block yet still doesn’t lack for structure. Give it a year or three and enjoy over the following decade. It’s another wine from Mike Smith that has classic Syrah characteristics yet stays firmly planted in California. It’s a beautiful wine.
