The 1997 Riesling Hochrain Smaragd has immense lift and is totally pervasive, somehow filled with notions of lovage, crushed parsley stalks and lemon oil. On the palate, a milder theme emerges, with smooth, almost waxed lemon peel, gentle flow, svelte equanimity and absolute concentration that turns into balm. This rings long with an unusual impression that combines caramel and passion fruit. It is simply wonderful at 28 years old.

Linden and elderflower aromas-in fact, persistently floral from nose through finish. Glyceral, polished, creamy, highly flattering mouth feel. Enormous richness of apricot fruit laced with insistent citrus notes and lovely inner-mouth florality. Long, striking finish features apricot, blackcurrant and lemon. Both of Hirtzberger's '97 riesling Smaragds were harvested November 11.
