This has noticeably more botrytis influence than the Kellerberg. It was picked so late (well into mid nov) that the must needed added nutrients to help the fermentation in the cold cellar temperatures. On the nose, smoky and almost savoury. Powerful, opening up on the palate to a lemon curd creaminess despite the initially dry and restrained style. Needs a little more time to integrate. (JH)

Knoll’s 2004 Riesling Smaragd Schutt smells of under-ripe peach with a touch of black pepper. Medium-bodied, brothy and impressively persistent, it offers the promise of short-term evolution, particularly in light of the excellent track record here with this superb site.
