The all-Grenache 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Puy Rolland Vieilles Vignes was vinified in concrete and aged in foudre. On the nose, it offers up almost crystalline notions of pure red raspberries and cherries, while in the mouth it's medium to full-bodied, silky, fine and elegant. It's not overly concentrated or tannic, distinguished from the main cuvée primarily by the purity of its fruit.

The smaller production 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Puy Rolland is all Grenache from sandy soils raised in foudre. It's slightly lighter hued compared to the other cuvées and offers a classic perfume of wild strawberries, iodine, violets, and Provençal spice. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, this is Grenache at its most feminine and elegant, with light tannins, a seamless, elegant texture, and outstanding length. It's going to benefit from just 2-3 years of bottle age but should evolve for 15 years on its balance, harmony, and purity. I continue to love these wines from the Bachas family, which come from a cool, sandy terroir on the northern slopes of the La Crau plateau. As I’ve written in the past, lovers of silky, elegant, and seamless Châteauneufs need to get on this estate’s bandwagon.

Deep violet. An expansive bouquet evokes fresh red and blue fruits, candied flowers and garrigue , along with building woodsmoke, allspice and licorice notes. Supple and open-knit, offering appealingly sweet raspberry and boysenberry flavors that convey a suave blend of depth and energy. Tightens up through a long, penetrating finish that echoes floral note and is framed by slowly building, well-judged tannins.

100% Grenache. Absolutely pristine raspberry fruit – a beautiful rendition of the variety, with the earthy edge of Châteauneuf, as well as chocolate and liquorice. Feathery tannins, bright acidity, medium body and a long, fennel-scented finish. This really evokes the Mediterranean landscape. That fruit is so enticing! (RH)
