More tannic and structured than the '07, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape le Puy Rolland offers lots of black raspberry, strawberry, truffle, ground herbs and earth-like aromatics. These give way to a full-bodied red that has solid mid-palate depth, sweet tannin and an elegant, layered style. As always, it comes from a tiny plot of sandy soils on the northern edge of the la Crau lieu-dit and was raised all in foudre. It will drink nicely over the coming 10-12 years.

My favorite vintage of this cuvee to date, the 2010 Le Puy Rolland is a stunning 100% Grenache blend that is aged for 18 months in tank and foudre. Deeper and richer than the ’11, with notions of black cherries, white pepper, garrigue, big minerality, and licorice, is has a medium to full-bodied, textured mouth feel to go with excellent purity of fruit, notable freshness, and an overall fine, elegant profile. Gaining additional complexity with air, this knockout effort should be given 2-4 years of bottle age, and then consumed over the following decade or more. It is beautifully done and shows the finer, more feminine side to Grenache.

(100% grenache raised in foudres): Deep, bright red. Lively and expressive on the nose, offering scents of wild strawberry and raspberry with deeper licorice and Indian spice qualities emerging with air. Bright, incisive red fruit flavors show very good depth, with a suave spicy component adding interest. Finishes bright and spicy, with very good clarity and bite.

100% Grenache. Blackish ruby. Very ripe and sweet and rather rhubarby. Like brown sugar. Lots of fun but maybe not the noblest example. Just enough freshness. So sweet! Difficult to see the tannins here. But hugely pleasurable. (JR)
