Score 94/100 · Drink 2019-2040, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Aug 2019

Disgorged in March 2019 with 4.5 grams per liter dosage, the 2008 Extra Brut Rosé Premier Cru 1522 may be the finest rendition of this cuvée to date. Opening in the glass with aromas of red berries, fresh peach, rose petal and spices including cardamon and cinnamon, it's medium to full-bodied, vinous and textural, with excellent concentration and a structured core, girdled by lively acids and concluding with a long and mineral finish.

The nose features a beautiful play between grilled almonds, praline, ginger, toasted bread and then vibrant rose petals, dried citrus and strawberries. The medium-bodied palate is quite vertical at first, but then comes a more savory, umami-like character, which punctuates this sleek Champagne with loads of saline undertones. Drink now.

The 2008 1522 Rosé offers a super-appealing combination of forward fruit and the brisk underlying energy that is such a signature of the year. Red berry and floral notes build in a creamy, beautifully textured Champagne endowed with terrific depth and density. The 1522 Rosé is built off a core of the 1522 Blanc with both still red and saginée Pinot, which gives it more color and richness stylistically than the Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé. Dosage is 4.25 grams per liter.

New release. Disgorged March 2019. Similar blend to the 1522 white, plus red and ros é . 72% Pinot Noir, 28% Chardonnay. ‘Aÿ spice always has a hint of red peppers', according to Charles Philipponnat. Intense nose and exciting breadth. Great balance and only a little kick of astringency on the end. Definitely more successful than the white version. (JR)
