(this site features barely a foot of dark soil over limestone and rock; entirely destemmed): Dark red-ruby. Fresh, subtle aromas of smoky black cherry, spices and sexy earth tones. A supple, juicy midweight, with nicely focused berry and cherry fruit flavors accented by spices. Ripe tannins spread out to dust the palate on the firm but sweet back end. These vines escaped the frost in 2016.

The 2016 Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru La Toppe Au Vert was 100% destemmed, as Thibault felt that it was already very fresh. It has a tightly wound, dark berry and earthy-scented bouquet, just a touch of leafiness. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a fine bead of acidity and blackcurrant pastille plus a touch of cassis toward the well-defined finish. Enjoy this over the next 6 to 8 years.
