The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vendange exhibits complex aromas of smoked duck, lead pencil shavings, jammy black fruits, truffles, melted asphalt and forest floor in its deep, rich, multidimensional, super-rich personality. With good acidity, sweet, well-integrated tannin and a long finish, this wine should evolve beautifully over the next 15+ years. One of the more exciting, relatively new estates in the southern Rhone is La Ferme du Mont, which is run with considerable enthusiasm as well as meticulous attention to detail by Stephane Vedeau. I bought his 2007s and am thrilled I did so as they combine the best of the southern Rhone with a Burgundian grand cru-like gracefulness and elegance. His 2011 and 2010 offerings are both outstanding, with the latter vintage possibly better than his 2007s. Readers should also check out this estate’s impressive Cotes du Rhones. Stephane Vedeau not only fashions exquisite Chateauneuf du Pape, but also terrific Cotes du Rhones. Importer: Peter Weygandt, Weygandt-Metzler, Uniontown, PA; tel. (610) 486-0800

Quite a bit richer and a blend of mostly Grenache, the 2010 La Ferme du Mont Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vendange delivers a sweet array of juicy black cherry and blackberry styled fruit, sweet spice, wild herbs, licorice, and loads of floral qualities that flow to a full-bodied, round, and supple 2010 that has outstanding concentration, plenty of texture, and the hallmark purity and freshness of the vintage. Relatively approachable, this will nevertheless benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and age gracefully for 15+ years.

Mid ruby. Interesting cocktail of very ripe fruit flavours on the nose. Very sweet and with tannins well massaged. Arguably a slight lack of freshness. Fruit a tad overripe? Then very marked acidity. Perhaps it will eventually become a swan... (JR)
