Tasting notes
With the base of 2019, the NV Champagne Grande Reserve Brut is a bright pale straw color and is forward and powerful on the nose, with slightly tarry aromas that benefit from some air on opening. It offers a lightly savory profile, with aromas of chamomile, white peach, crushed rocks, and bread dough. Medium-framed, it’s approachable and appealing, with a frothy mousse and a clean, delicately tapering finish. Drink now or over the next 4-6 years.

Empty bottle 1,045 g. 40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Meunier. Champagne Gosset work with around 200 growers who, between them, have approximately 120 hectares, mainly around Épernay. Malolactic conversion was avoided. Each cru was vinified separately, with no filtration and aged on fine lees. Winemaker Odilon de Varine. Natural cork. TA 7.8 g/l, pH 3, RS 9 g/l. Vegan. Available in over 200 shops. Plenty of richness on the palate with complex, yeasty flavours and a fine mousse. Dosage seems rather high, making the wine taste a little saccharine on the finish. Seems very expensive for what is on offer – there are many better-value alternatives out there. (AWH)
Displaying a bright straw hue, the NV Champagne Grande Reserve Brut is a blend of 45% each Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a splash of Meunier. It’s a gorgeous wine, showcasing the estate's freshness and charm, with a pillowy and elegant profile. Notes of ripe peach, tangerine, fresh flowers, and fresh pastry are present. Supple and inviting, it offers a creamy mousse with a silky texture and notes of almond pastry through the finish. Drink 2025-2032.
45% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir, 10% Pinot Meunier. Dosage 8 g/l after four years on lees. The tech spec suggests 2018 was the base vintage. Maturation is more obvious on the nose of this wine than on that of the Petite Douceur Rosé which had more than twice as long in the cellar on lees! Slightly aggressive mousse and acidity but this is certainly stimulating and is clearly set for a fine future. Fine elderflower flavours and good balance and composition. Quite persistent. Not the most overpriced champagne on the market. (JR)
