From a 40-year-old premier cru vineyard. Pungent, well priced, tight and dense. Lemon spume. Quite youthful. GV (JR)

Milky, creamy nose with very sharp apple fruit – very acidic and green, giving an unexpected austerity to the palate. Impressive, but not the most user friendly of champagnes. (RH)

Toasted almond and caramel apple scents in Veuve Fourny’s NV Brut Blanc de Blancs L20062 set the stage for a confectionary palate impression nicely balanced by fresh juiciness of apple and Persian melon. Finely polished and subtly sustained, this isn’t especially emphatic in flavor or possessed of noticeable mineral dimensions, but is still bound to offer soothing satisfaction over the coming year. Brothers Charles-Henry and Emmanuel Fourny profess to maximize micro-vinifications in order to achieve the most interesting blends, and they permit or (more often) discourage malo-lactic conversion according to their assessment of blending potential, vintage, or individual must. The young wines characteristically receive lees-stirring and a portion is raised in barrel. (Bottles of Brut Grand Reserve and Brut Rose tasted from Veuve Fourny on this occasion were modestly recommendable, but since neither a lot number nor disgorgement date was indicated on their labels or bottles, I have refrained from rating them.)
