Bright-rimmed ruby. Expansive spice- and mineral-tinged aromas of Chambord and blueberry, joined by potpourri and woodsmoke nuances as the wine opens up. Stains the palate with intense red and blue fruit and candied lavender flavors, conveying a suave blend of depth and energy. Supple, even tannins give shape to an impressively long finish that emphatically repeats the red fruit and floral notes.

The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Puy Rolland offers slightly more kirsch liqueur and dried soil notes and is medium-bodied, silky and polished on the palate, with both elegance and length. Based all on Grenache from sandy soils, brought up in foudre, it's still tight and closed and will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age, but it's going to see it 20th birthday in fine form. I’ve always loved the wines of this estate, which is run by Anne Charlotte Melia-Bachas. Located on cooler, sandy, north-facing slopes, these wines are never blockbuster yet shine for their elegance, finesse, and purity. They also age beautifully.
The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape le Puy Rolland is 100% Grenache and matured in foudres. The result is a full-bodied, silky-textured wine that delivers plenty of cherry fruit, but with complex accents of leather, dried spices, dusty earth and licorice and a long, elegant finish.
