An incredible effort that represent a smoking value, the 2012 Gigondas is a big, rich, concentrated effort that has tons of dark fruit, scorched earth, licorice and distinct minerality all emerging from the glass. Made from 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Cinsault that was aged 18 months in concrete tanks, enjoy this full-bodied, stacked Gigondas over the coming decade.

Deep ruby. Smoky raspberry and garrigue aromas are lifted by a spicy nuance. Pliant, ripe and broad on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering sappy red fruit flavors that pick up a touch of warmth with aeration. Takes a turn to darker fruits on the finish, which features a note of candied plum. By the way, the 2011 is showing a lot of upfront fruit and drinking very well now, based on a bottle that I tried in November while I was in Gigondas.

Notably dark crimson. Big and brawny on the nose with quite severe tannins after some pretty firmly macerated fruit. Fades a bit fast. (JR)
