A myriad of spices are found in the nose of the 2000 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Durnsteiner Kellerberg. This light to medium-bodied wine offers good depth of fruit, a soft texture, and lovely smoked mineral, stone, and spice flavors. Drink it over the next 3 years. Honey and watermelon aromas signal enormous ripeness. Voluminous, glossy and fat in the mouth; saturated with notes of white pepper and iron filings. Like the corresponding Achleiten, this stopped fermenting with a few grams of residual sugar. With its combination of almost overripe fruit and adamant minerality, this blazes a memorable trail across the palate. 1 star.
