Bright-hued ruby. Mineral-accented raspberry, cherry liqueur and garrigue aromas are complicated by subtle game and incense nuances. Silky, focused and alluringly sweet, offering pliant red and blue fruit preserve, spicecake and floral pastille flavors that in no way show that this wine is wine is from warm year. Finishes sappy, sweet and extremely long, with suave, well-knit tannins and resonating floral and spice notes.

Tasted blind. Grainy tannins, rich black fruit and spice to finish – good Châteauneuf typicality. Juicy and well-defined fruit, but there isn't much in the way of flavour complexity. (RH)

Lastly, lots of black cherries, earth, peppery herbs, and graphite notes emerge from the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Prestige. It has more density than the Les Sables de La Crau, is medium to full-bodied, has ripe tannins, and plenty of length. It’s another character-filled, expressive wine from Jean Marie Royer. All of these releases from Jean-Marie Royer focus on Grenache sourced from sandy soils. These are always more lightly colored yet perfumed, intense wines that have classic Grenache characters.
