An excellent Côtes du Rhône, the 2009 Château Signac Cuvée Combe D'enfer is a tank aged blend of 40% Carignan, 30% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, and the balance Syrah and Counoise. Deep ruby in color, it displays a rich, mineral-laced array of black cherries, damp earth, underbrush, and new leather on the nose. Chewy and rich on the palate, with excellent mid-palate concentration, juicy acidity, and a full, fleshy texture, this beauty opens up over the evening and has real character and depth. It can be consumed now, or cellared for 4-5 years.

Composed of 48% Carignan, 29% Mourvedre, 18% Grenache and the rest Syrah, the 2009 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Combe d’Enfer reveals lots of minerality as well as some hard, angular edges. There is a distinctive earthy character (no doubt from the Carignan and Mourvedre) in addition to crisp acidity and an intriguing mushroomy, earthy, spicy, peppery personality. While slightly angular, this 2009 should age nicely for 5-6 years. Signac is a relatively large estate of just over 90 acres situated in the under-the-radar village of Chusclan. Importer: Petit Pois Corp., Moorestown, NJ; tel. (856) 608-9644.
