Tasting notes
The 2006 Ried Vogelsang is a blend of Pinot Blanc, Furmint, Welschriesling, and Muskateller fermented in tank and then given a stay in fuder. Ripe melon, quince, pink grapefruit, banana, and sweet flowers in the nose offer an effusive introduction to a fruit bomb of extreme ripeness, positively lush, and backed by residual sugar left behind in order to limit the finished alcohol. Yet for all that, there is a juicy fresh-fruited core here, too, (as with this year’s Pinot Blanc) and subtly pungent herb and citrus zest notes add invigoration to the finish. Given the precipitant ripening and high sugars of the vintage, Heidi Schrock’s “dry” 2006s are remarkably successful, although not always analytically dry.
