Tasting notes
Savart's 2019 Écueil Les Noues falls slightly short of its anticipated caliber, presenting a broader, more precocious profile. Disgorged in January 2024 with a dosage of two grams per liter, it reveals a bouquet of red apple, orange zest and beeswax, with subtle hints of honey. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated and dense, but based on the sample tasted, it also feels precociously plush and appears to be evolving more swiftly than expected. The brightness of fruit seen in the 2020 vintage is absent here, suggesting that this may be best enjoyed sooner rather than later. It was vinified in 500-liter barrels, with 50% being new oak.

A remarkable vintage for this wine, the 2019 Champagne Premier Cru Les Noues Extra Brut is entirely made from Pinot Noir. It pours a straw/copper-tinged color and is assertive on opening, with notes of black cherries, savory broth, and pure fruit. The mousse is elegant and not dominating. Rather, it’s all about the wine, which offers ripe blackberry fruit and a long, elegant finish. It’s a superb wine with a ripe feel, a toasty note, but well-managed structure to drink over the coming 15 or more years.
The 2019 Extra-Brut Les Noues is 100% Pinot Noir from a parcel planted on sand over chalk. It is endowed with tremendous textural richness and breadth that captures the natural intensity of this radiant year. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, mint, cinnamon and light nutty overtones all grace this exquisite, open-knit Champagne. Even with its very recent disgorgement, the 2019 is very easy to enjoy right now. Disgorged: February 2023.
