Veuve Fourny’s 2005 Brut Millesime Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru, an old-vine Chardonnay, is seriously rich, deep and implosive. Today, the wine is incredibly young, but the layers of fruit and pure pedigree are impossible to miss. There is an energy and tension to the finish that is pure Vertus. The 2005 is striking, but it clearly needs time. My impression is that the flavors will mature before the structural elements soften, so I wouldn’t wait too long on the 2005. Bright yellow. Ripe pear, melon and nectarine on the nose, with chalk and lemon nuances adding lift and energy. Powerful but vibrant, with silky orchard and citrus fruit flavors that are complicated by notes of honeysuckle and tarragon. Picks up a spicy quality with air and finishes with excellent clarity and lingering floral notes. This Champagne is drinking well right now.
The 2005 Brut Millesime Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru hits the palate with a burst of mineral-infused fruit, slate and chalk. At this stage the 2005 is a bit monolithic. If it develops a measure of finesse it might merit a higher score, but today it comes across as a bit rustic and lacking the polish of the best wines here. This is Lot 65021. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015. Veuve Fourny is one of Champagne’s many under-the-radar producers that deserve to be better known.
