Tasting notes
The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Secrets de Pignan—a tank-aged 100% Grenache from the sandy soils of Pignan (Nord)—offers more intensity than the regular cuvée, and more red-fruit flavors as well. Raspberries, cherries and hints of resinous herbs mark the nose, while the full-bodied palate is rich, velvety and long on the finish, with just a hint of warmth coming through, offset by attractive dried-spice notes. Compared to previous recent vintages, it's a bit less complex and charming.

Surprisingly fresh and almost playful for this very ripe vintage, this marries considerable richness with elegant tannins. The underplayed power and barely perceptible alcohol make this very easy to enjoy right now, but thereâs good spicy and earthy complexity at the long, precise finish. Drink or hold.
The tiny production 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Secrets De Pignan (100% Grenache) comes from one of the top terroirs in the appellation and was brought up all in tank. Awesome kirsch liqueur and wild strawberry fruits as well as roasted herbs, nori, licorice, and baking spice notes just about jump from the glass of this beauty, and it's full-bodied, with a deep, layered, unctuous texture, sweet tannins, and a monster of a finish. This tour de force in Grenache is going to shine for two decades or more. Bravo to Eric Bonnet!
