In total contrast to the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Secret de Gabriel is brilliant. Dark ruby purple with notes of roasted meats interwoven with smoky herbes de Provence, lavender, sweet kirsch and blacker currants, the wine is deep, full-bodied, rich and at the same time very precise, elegant and perfumed. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. Importer: Neal Rosenthal, Rosenthal Wine Merchant, www.madrose.com

Aged only in older foudre in comparison and a blend of mostly old vine Grenache (90% Grenache, 5% Mourvedre, and 5% Cinsault), the 2010 Secret de Gabriel is a beauty! Showing thrilling, Grenache dominate aromas of blackberry, licorice, roasted meats, pepper, and hints of leather, this powerful, full-bodied 2010 has a structured, focused feel in the mouth and comes across as very traditional and age-worthy. While beautifully textured, rich, and balanced, it is still tightly wound, with chewy, mouth coating tannin and in need of 3-5 years of bottle age. It will have upwards of two decades or more of total longevity.

(90% grenache from vines planted in the 19th century, and 5% each of mourvedre and cinsault): Saturated ruby. Vibrant, spice-accented aromas of cherry pit, black raspberry and potpourri, with a hint of star anise in the background. Juicy and incisive on the palate, with powerful red fruit liqueur flavors that pick up spiciness and minerality with air. The mineral and spice notes repeat on the very long, pure, focused finish. This should age slowly and well.
